Alone in the Dark is shaping up to be a pretty scary affair, but even horror games have things to fear too, like a jam-packed October release schedule that could easily cause the horror reboot to get lost in the shuffle.

As a result, developers Pieces Interactive and Publisher THQ Nordic have made the decision to delay the title until January 16, 2024 to give it some breathing room. The delay was revealed in a short statement on Twitter, alongside a more detailed press release.

Alone in the Dark is more than a name, it's a way of being

In the press release, the developers had some fun with the announcement, weaving an eerie tale to explain the news. “Envision yourself traversing a dimly lit house in the dead of night, where faint whispers and unidentifiable noises send shivers down your spine. Now, picture this unsettling scenario not alone, but accompanied by a group of 28 intriguing individuals. The fear factor dwindles, doesn't it?”

As a result, Alone in the Dark will “gracefully step away from the chaotic October 2023 launch window”, they continued.

There are several heavy hitters dropping in October, including Assassin’s Creed: Mirage and Forza Motorsport, but the biggest competition for Alone in the Dark fans’ attention would surely have been Alan Wake 2, which launches on October 27. This highly-anticipated (and long awaited) sequel from Remedy Entertainment has garnered some strong first impressions after its gameplay reveal at the Summer Game Fest.

The Alone in the Dark series has had its ups and downs over the years (and if we’re honest, mostly downs), but we’re cautiously optimistic about this latest instalment. We’re back in the original 1920s setting and the screenshots we’ve seen look gorgeous – very atmospheric, which is what horror relies on. We’re also back with the original protagonists from the original 1992 game – Edward Carnby and Emily Hartwood, this time played by big-time actors David Harbour and Jodie Comer. The story has been written by Mikael Hedberg, the mastermind behind SOMA and Amnesia: The Dark Descent.

All the pieces are there, and hopefully the developers can put them together and restore Alone in the Dark to the pantheon of great survival horror games.
